Sooty

Sooty is a marking that affects the base coat. This marking darkens the coat, covering up to 80 % of the body with darker hairs. Sooty always has a texture to it, and may have heavy 'dappling', where the base coat shows through and gives the appearance of dapples. Typically concentrated on the topline, face and knees, sooty should blend out into the coat and have no hard edges. Sooty can show in the mane and tail, but should fade out as it reaches the ends. It will not cause a solid black mane or tail.

The geno code for Sooty is written as:

Dun + Sooty

When dominant dun combines with sooty, the markings may interact into what is called a Bider mark. The sooty will concentrate into a mottled, lacy marking extending from the wither down over the shoulder.
